Bioavailability — The Only Metric That Counts | Spawn Nutra

Bioavailability

The fraction of a dose that actually reaches your cells. It's the only number that tells you whether a supplement works — or whether you just bought expensive label theatre.

01 — The Metric

The only number that counts.

Bioavailability (F) is the fraction of an oral dose that reaches systemic circulation intact. Pharmacologists measure it against an intravenous dose — the gold standard, where 100% of the compound is delivered straight to the blood.

Time after dose → Plasma conc.
Liposomal Standard form

Area under the curve

The bigger the area beneath the plasma concentration curve, the more your cells actually receive over time. Bioavailability is calculated as that oral area versus the IV area of the same compound:

F = (AUCoral × DoseIV) ÷ (AUCIV × Doseoral)

A compound at 5% F needs a dose 20× larger to match its IV equivalent. That's not a rounding error — it's the difference between a working formula and a placebo with a good label.

AUC

Total exposure — the whole area under the plasma-concentration curve. The headline measure of how much reaches you.

Cmax

Peak plasma concentration. How high the compound climbs at its most concentrated moment.

Tmax

Time to that peak. Liposomal delivery tends to arrive faster as well as higher.

02 — The Barriers

Why most of the dose never arrives.

Between the capsule and your cells sits a gauntlet. Conventional supplements walk into it unprotected — and up to 99% of the active can be lost before absorption.

pH 1.5

Gastric Acid

Stomach acid and digestive enzymes denature and hydrolyse fragile actives — peptides like glutathione are destroyed outright.

1st-pass

Liver Metabolism

Whatever survives the gut hits the liver first, where compounds like resveratrol are glucuronidated into near-oblivion.

H₂O

Poor Solubility

Fat-soluble molecules like CoQ10 can't dissolve in the watery gut environment, so they never present for absorption.

MAX

Transporter Saturation

Carrier-limited nutrients like Vitamin C cap out — past a point, extra milligrams just wash straight through.

03 — The Routes

Four ways across the gut wall.

Absorption isn't one process — it's four, each with a different ceiling. Only the liposomal routes stay open at nutritional doses.

~30%

Passive Diffusion

Concentration-driven drift across the gut wall. Saturates fast. The pathway most conventional supplements rely on.

~60%

Active Transport

Carrier-protein shuttles for specific molecules — efficient, but substrates compete for the same doors.

~85%

Endocytosis · Liposomal

The cell engulfs the whole liposome. Not concentration-dependent, not saturable at nutritional doses.

↑↑

Lymphatic Uptake

Lipid-encapsulated actives enter via chylomicron packaging — bypassing first-pass liver metabolism entirely.

04 — The Data

05 — Your Variables

Why your mileage will vary.

Published figures describe populations, not people. Your own absorption of any compound shifts with:

Formulation quality

Encapsulation efficiency and particle size decide how much of a "liposomal" product is genuinely encapsulated.

Dose & timing

Saturable pathways behave differently at 200mg than at 1,000mg; fat-soluble actives absorb better with food.

Gut health

Transit time, microbiome, and mucosal integrity all move the number up or down.

Genetics

Enzyme and transporter polymorphisms mean two people can process the same dose very differently.

How to read these numbers

The bioavailability figures on this page are estimated ranges drawn from comparative pharmacokinetic literature, provided to explain the formulation rationale behind our liposomal approach — not to claim a specific clinical outcome for any product.
